Chrysler to cut 13,000 jobs under restructuring plan


Chrysler said it will cut 13,000 jobs over the next three years under a restructuring plan that eventually may lead to a DaimlerChrysler divorce.

The Chrysler unit of the German-American automaker announced the long-awaited plan Wednesday at its Auburn Hills headquarters, saying it would cut 16 percent of the U.S. division's worldwide work force, a move it hoped would return its U.S. operations to profitability by next year.

"We believe that this represents a solid plan to return to profitability and lay the groundwork for a solid future,'' Chrysler CEO Tom LaSorda said at a news conference.

Chrysler's German parent, DaimlerChrysler AG, said it is looking at all options to revive its fortunes, including partners for the troubled Chrysler.

Its chairman would not rule out a possible sale of the U.S. operation.

"I cannot and will not go into any further detail about the announcement we made today,'' DaimlerChrysler Chairman Dieter Zetsche, said during a news conference.

"In this regard we do not exclude any option in order to find the best solution for both the Chrysler Group and DaimlerChrysler,'' Zetsche said.

Zetsche acknowledged feeling pressure about Chrysler, which the company said was a drag on its parent's earnings.

Under the Chrysler plan, 11,000 production workers - 9,000 in the U.S. and 2,000 in Canada - will lose their jobs over the next three years, and 2,000 salaried jobs also will be cut - 1,000 this year and 1,000 in 2008.

"Today's action by DaimlerChrysler is devastating news for thousands of workers, their families and their communities,'' United Auto Workers President Ron Gettelfinger and Vice President General Holiefield said in a joint statement.

"While Chrysler Group's recent losses are not the fault of UAW members, they will suffer because of the reductions announced today.''

The restructuring plan calls for closing the company's assembly plant in Newark, Delaware, and reducing shifts at other U.S. plants.

Chrysler blamed the wrenching restructuring on poor sales after a shift in consumer taste from sport utility vehicles and trucks to more fuel-efficient vehicles.

Workers blamed management.

With Chrysler's job losses, the U.S. auto industry has eliminated or proposed cutting 132,000 manufacturing jobs at 64 U.S. plants since May 2005, said Sean McAlinden, chief economist and vice president of research at the nonprofit Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The devastation was partially offset by foreign brands expanding their manufacturing operations in the U.S. During that same period, foreign brands, such as Japan's Toyota Motor Corp., and their suppliers have created 30,000 to 40,000 factory jobs in the U.S.

That should rise to 50,000 to 60,000 by 2009, McAlinden said.

Like the other U.S. automakers - Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Corp. - DaimlerChrysler's earnings have been hit hard by rising labor costs and slumping sales as American consumers have turned to foreign models.

For years, the so-called Big Three pinned their fortunes on higher-priced sport utility vehicles and trucks, but that strategy soured when gas prices climbed to near $3 a gallon.

Chrysler said Wednesday that its fourth-quarter earnings plunged on weaker demand at the Chrysler unit, where sales fell 7 percent.

DaimlerChrysler's profit fell to $761 million (euro581.7 million), or 74 cents per share, as revenue slipped to $53.7 billion.

DaimlerChrysler earned $4.26 billion (euro3.26 billion), or $4.17 per share, in 2006 compared with 2005 earnings of $3.76 billion (euro2.87 billion), or $3.70 per share.

The job cuts at Chrysler will reduce by 400,000 the number of vehicles that operations can produce each year.

經濟看俏卻蒙虧 普騰生產反應太慢 - Tuesday, February 13, 2007

(吉隆坡12日訊)國家汽車工業控股(普騰)前首席執行員丹斯里馬哈里爾指出,普騰在當前經濟成長看俏時卻鉅額蒙虧教人難以置信,他更抨擊普騰過去一年反應緩慢,完全不及格!

他指出,普騰的競爭力可從4大參數(parameter)來評估,分別是「成本」、「品質」、「新產品」、「速度」,這4大要素都是企業在自由化市場的競爭要訣。

他在離職普騰近年余后,對大馬首家國產車公司在新任領導層下作出這樣的評分:成本:「良好」、品質:「合格」、新產品:「合格」、速度:「不及格」。

馬哈里爾接受《東方日報》專訪時指出,「普騰在過去一年沒有任何東西在移動,而其他人卻移動得如此快速,這樣的速度已經是個F(FAIL)!」

他透露,普騰目前急需新車款來應市,但現成的車盤沒有已被荒廢,包括Savvy,Gen.2、華嘉、頂尖模型(High Advanced Modular)以及蓮花(lotus)。

他表示,其實每個車盤可衍生出5輛轎車,但普騰現在只從中研製出4輛汽車,其余21輛汽車都無法面市,而引擎方面,勇士NEO應該有GTI版本,更會衍發成4門NEO版。

「在我離開后,有多少款新車推出,又有多少款汽車有易容版?Gen.2、Savvy、華嘉改裝版、NEO都是出自我的手筆。」

他補充,普騰沒有足夠的引擎,因為5個車盤馬力是介于1公升至3.5公升,而頂尖模型車盤是用于「將相」替代版、運動型跑車,甚至可製成類似寶馬5系列實力的房車。

須研製汽車提高競爭

針對普騰轎車品質低下的惡評,馬哈里爾坦承,普騰的品質還未到頂尖水平,充其量是中下的合格水平,因此提升品質仍需很多功夫。

但他說,普騰轎車品質是「還可以」,「如果品質太差,根本進不到市場,你不會在街上看到這樣多普騰汽車。」

他強調,普騰必須擁有本身研製的汽車,而非以貼牌車來面市,否則根本不能競爭。

他強調,他在普騰掌權的1996年至2005年時,即使經歷金融風暴期間,普騰在舊有的董事局下並沒有蒙虧,「為什麼現在經濟成長有5%,普騰卻虧損連連?這是難以置信的。」

據報導,普騰迄至2007財政年第2季時,傳出虧損2億5110萬令吉,但在2002年時曾創下11億7370萬令吉的稅前盈利記錄。

他說,如果普騰綜合所有的特色,只能得分50分,普騰還可以靠本身的力量來更上一層樓嗎?

馬哈里爾:福士偉根是普騰唯一出路 - Sunday, February 11, 2007

吉隆坡10日訊)在國家汽車工業控股(普騰)策略夥伴花落誰家的臆測中,普騰年前離職的前首席執行員丹斯里馬哈里爾表示,德國車商福士偉根是普騰的出路,否則就是走進死胡同。

「福士偉根是最策略性的選擇。如果你說, 普騰汽車是德國汽車, 國人的信心馬上回來, 但若是法國汽車,他們或會說,『哎呀!』」

他接受《東方日報》獨家專訪時提問:「普騰要與一個贏家拍擋,還是要與一個輸家合夥?」

「贏家就是個常能帶來符合消費者產品需求的公司,普騰在尋求策略夥伴時,必須符合成本、品質、新產品及速度這4方面條件。」

馬哈里爾繼2005年6月接受《東方日報》專訪掀起滿城風雨,也造成他倉皇離職。這也是他闊別普騰一年余后,首度公開發表普騰的策略夥伴的看法。

他說,福士偉根收購不少名牌轎車,如奧迪、賓特利及藍寶堅尼都擲地有聲,也成功將源自捷克的斯柯達(Skoda)扭轉局勢,已建立消費者對該公司的品牌信心。

目前普騰已與德國的福士偉根、法國標緻雪鐵龍集團洽談,而美國通用汽車集團也與普騰展開初步晤談。另外,據報導,德國戴姆勒克萊斯勒也對普騰蠢蠢欲動。

馬哈里爾續指出,若以全球汽車地緣性的市場來區分,福士偉根在歐洲、美國、亞洲及南美州市場表現不俗。

「法國標緻雪鐵龍集團只有在歐洲有市場,其他較弱;美國通用汽車在歐洲與南美洲有中等銷量,亞洲疲弱,在美國本土更面對日本轎車的侵蝕。」

他說, 通用汽車在本地只以雪佛萊品牌亮相,Spark、Aveo、Optra的三種車款在2006年只售出146輛,是大馬相當陌生的品牌。馬哈里爾透露,福士偉根曾答應提供許多便利給普騰,包括協助普騰在1至2年內出售至少5萬至10萬輛汽車,而普騰當前迫切恢復以往每年20萬輛的銷量。

他強調,普騰也可借助福士偉根重新打造品牌,或以普騰名牌車款來登陸缺席的市場。

「福士偉根可協助我國一些符合資格的零件供應商沖出大馬,走進全球的零件供應鏈,更可以達成出口,這些都帶來不少外匯。」

他表示,普騰需要策略夥伴來快速解決許多懸而未決的事情,包括設計製車。

政府是通過持有國庫控股的42.7%股權成為普騰最大股東,在3月份時這場混合戰中的最后贏家將有分曉。

据悉,除了4家海外知名的製車廠外,本地也有3家集團也加入競標戰圍,包括納莎集團、多元重工業及森那美集團,惟森那美較后透露沒有提呈任何競標建議書。

政府在去年11月9日宣佈考慮出讓普騰製車生產部51%的股權給德國著名車商福士偉根,一度刺激普騰股價飆升。

他也說,普騰18億令吉的丹絨馬林製車廠是另一賣點,而該廠也具備價值5億令吉的鑄件工具,可讓外資夥伴省卻時間與金錢。

「與普騰合夥,可快速登陸150萬輛的東盟市場,而普騰旗下有400經銷商,這大批經銷商可以分配成銷售不同品牌的汽車。」

(吉隆坡11日訊)國家汽車工業控股(普騰)前任首席執行員丹斯里馬哈里爾強調,如果普騰出售給本地汽車業者,意味著整個國家計劃蕩然無存,「國產車」將宣告消亡。

他說,如果普騰要與本地企業結合成策略夥伴,那第一項思考就是:政府要出售普騰嗎?

「我不知道現在有關當局的思維是什么,不過當時政府的思維是,你不能出售股權,普騰控股不可出售,但旗下的(子公司)是可以放手。」

他接受《東方日報》獨家專訪時指出 ,將普騰出售予個人,那只是成就一個企業家,例如納莎集團,那是丹斯里納西慕丁的個人企業。

「假設普騰出售給多元重工業(DRB-HICOM),那也是掛牌公司,其中不少股份是個人大批持有;若賣給森那美集團,那是政府的一間掛牌公司。」

他說,他聽聞普騰目前還剩下5億至6億令吉的儲備金。「可是當年我離開普騰時,普騰擁有24億令吉儲備金。」

他反問,普騰目前真的需要金錢嗎?「不,普騰不需要金錢,那你說來幹什么?」

普騰曾經一度在大馬賣得滿堂紅,然而2007財政年卻赤字帳簿示人,市佔率也大跌至30%而已,海外有3家公司愿意與普騰成為策略夥伴;本地則有2家企業積極爭取入股普騰。

這包括本地著名AP天王納西慕丁,以納莎集團為首在今年1月已提呈建議書給以副首相拿督斯里納吉為首的內閣委員會,矢言收購國庫控股42%股權,並列出8大援助普騰的方針。

2公司組裝汽車為首

較早時,多元重工業在去年12月,申購國庫控股在普騰32.9%的股權。兩者紛紛呼籲政府應將普騰出讓給本土人,這才顯得更有商業道理。

其中,納西慕丁更認為,本地人應主導普騰,一旦如果拱手讓出普騰主導權,國產車就不存在。

不過,這兩家公司都是以組裝汽車為首,與普騰目前走的「生產製造」汽車路線不盡相同,特別是普騰于丹絨馬林的製車廠以鉅資建立,同時具備先進的製車儀器。

馬哈里爾指出,研發新車需耗資40億令吉,而普騰只剩下5億至6億令吉儲備金,如果本地這些企業家要延續製車計劃,到底誰愿意掏出35億令吉出來?

「他們是有錢,但哪間公司擁有足夠的資本?」

他強調,汽車組裝不涉及高層次的知識,因為只需螺絲釘與裝配架等工具就可成事,但製造汽車的開發成本,其中50%是人力資源的成本。

「如果你看藥物,一種藥物的70%至80%成本是人力資本,另20%等是才是材料成本。」

他繼指,製造一輛車需要10億令吉,當中4億5000萬令吉是人力資源成本,5億5000萬令吉是焊接、裝置等工具成本。

「這些競標的本地企業又是否會珍惜普騰所具備的科技技術?沒有一間公司是擁有這樣的製造生產汽車的條件,也沒有一間擁有全方位的測驗工作室。」

他表示,日本在汽車業研究方面每年可達到500億令吉的開支,作為產品開發開銷,而普騰的汽車研究撥款只是每年5億令吉,現在則根本沒有花一分一毫。

Jetro To Exhibit Proton Gen 2 And Satria Neo In Tokyo

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 6 (Bernama) -- The Japan External Trade Organisation or Jetro will exhibit the Proton Gen 2 and Satria Neo passengers cars at Tokyo's International Auto Aftermarket Expo 2007 from March 16 to 18, it was announced Tuesday.

Jetro will also bring 11 Malaysian auto part makers to exhibit their products at the expo, said Tomoko Fukada, a director at the Jetro Kuala Lumpur office here.

She told Bernama that the objective is to increase recognition among Japanese auto-related companies on the capability of the Malaysian auto industry.

Their participation is also to provide them opportunities to exchange ideas with their Japanese counterparts with the hope that they could secure exports of their products to Japan, she said.

Fukada said their participation is under the Malaysia-Japan Automotive Industry Cooperation or MAJAICO project, which is part of the Economic Partnership Agreement between Japan and Malaysia.

It is also believed that the exhibition of Proton cars is one of the events being held by Jetro to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Japan-Malaysia diplomatic relations this year.

Other projects under MAJAICO being coordinated by Jetro include providing technical assistance to the Advanced Technology Training Centre (Adtec) in Shah Alam and despatching 10 Malaysian auto part makers to Tokyo and Osaka last November for business matching with potential Japanese buyers.

So far, seven automotive experts or trainers had been sent from Japan to Adtec.

Fukada said a mission comprising auto part makers from Japan would visit Malaysia from Feb 26 to March 1 to meet their Malaysian counterparts and explore potential business opportunities.
